Who these are actually for
Not the host. The host gets wine and a card with everyone else’s name on it. These are for the people who made the year survivable: the friend who took the call at midnight, the parent who drove four hours, the neighbour who kept an eye on things.
A link also solves the specific Thanksgiving problem — everyone is travelling, nobody is reliably at an address, and the people you are most grateful to are often the ones you cannot get to.
What to send
Autumn palettes usually mean orange and rust, but in this set the closest thing to a Thanksgiving arrangement is a sunflower with a carnation — warm, generous, and not trying to be seasonal decoration.
For someone who has had a hard year, skip the celebration entirely. Lavender or a magnolia says “I am grateful for you” without requiring them to be thankful for anything else.
- For the friend who held it together: carnation + hydrangea
- For a parent: a peony on its own
- For a hard year: lavender and a lily
- For someone far away: a sunflower, because it travels well on a screen
What to write
Thanksgiving notes work best as one sentence with a specific noun in it. “I have been grateful all year for the Thursday you drove me to the hospital” does more than a paragraph about family.
It is also allowed to be a little plain. “I am glad you are in my life. That is the whole message” is a complete Thanksgiving note.
