Sympathy messages, kept simple

There is almost nothing you can say that will make it better, and that is fine. The job of a condolence message is to show up without asking anything in return.

When you knew the person who died

Naming them is the single most consoling thing in the message.

When you did not know them

For a colleague

Professional, warm, and not demanding a reply.

Weeks later

The most underrated category. Send it in week four.

Common questions

What is a safe condolence message?

“I am so sorry. I am thinking of you and of [name].” It is short, it names the person, and it asks for nothing.

Should I send flowers or make a donation?

If the family named a charity, donate. Otherwise a quiet bouquet and a message that expects no reply is a good default.

What if I say the wrong thing?

Almost anything said with care is better than silence. The wrong thing is saying nothing for fear of saying the wrong thing.

Is it too late to send condolences?

No. A message in week six often means more than one in week one.
