Flowers that suit a birthday
A rose with a peony is the full, generous combination — it reads as celebration without trying too hard. Add a daisy if you want it lighter.
If the birthday is for someone you are not romantic with, skip the rose. A tulip and a daisy, or a peony on its own, says warm without saying more than you mean.
- Partner or spouse: rose + peony, warm card
- Close friend: tulip + daisy, botanical card
- Parent: lily + camellia, vintage card
- Colleague you actually like: daisy alone, elegant card
What to write
The best birthday notes name one specific thing from the past year. Not “happy birthday, hope it is a great one” — that is a card, not a message. “The year you moved and made it look easy” or “still thinking about the thing you said at dinner in March”.
Keep it to two sentences. The flowers carry the decoration; the note only has to sound like you on a normal day.
If you are late
Send it anyway. A birthday bouquet two days late with an honest note beats one that never arrives. “I know I am late, I was thinking about you on the day and did not get this out in time” is a better message than silence.
